We rescue and rehabilitate lost, abused, neglected and unwanted horses and provide for them a safe and happy life. Whether they live out their days in our Sanctuary Pastures program or participate in our Sole Adventures trail rides each Sole we rescue gets to live out their life with dignity and respect. In perfect cases we also rehome a Sole when there is a good match.
Thelma was why and how Lost Soles Horse Rescue was created. Tonya Bills answered an add requesting horse rescuers go deep into the yolla bolly forest to locate and catch two abandoned horses. Kymber Mayberry accompanied her and they found two extremely emaciated horses, wet, cold and starving. Both of them were brought to safety, taken to the vet, and then brought to an interim home.
Bella is a 15 year old double registered American Hackney and Arabian. We adopted her from another rescue where she and her brother were taken in when their owners died of cancer.
April is not a rescued horse, she is a rescue horse. She one of our best lead herd mares who takes very good care of new intakes. She has a lot of spunk but is the sweetest horse in the whole world. Her father was a purebred Morgan, and her mother a Pony of America. She is the perfect size for kids and small adults, and the personal favorite of our experienced riders.
Taylor is a double registered poco bueno foundation quarter and grulla dun buckskin. She was rescued because her owner had broken her neck and could not continue her training. She had ground manners, but had never been under saddle. After many walks through the forested area near where she was stabled, one day Kymber just got on her back. She has been one of our most solid "bomb proof" soles ever since. She is the perfect herd mare and can be trusted with any Sole.
Baylee, a bay quarter horse who originally was used for barrel racing, was given to us when she was 21 years old because she had vulva cancer and her owner could not continue her care. She was successfully treated conventionally and with cannabis and did very well. She was with us for 6 years, and taught almost every volunteer how to ride, and ride well. In 2023 her long and happy life ended comfortably, in a warm stall, full belly, and surrounded by love. She was one of our most beloved and sweet soles, and she will be missed dearly.
Gigi (Gin and Juice) is an amazing mare rescued during devastating fires in the fall of 2019. She could not return to her home, and we decided to keep her forever. She came from the same ranch that Bo, Brandy, Ollie, King and Prince came from. We accepted the herd into our family and kept them together until we found new homes for Ollie, Brandy and King. She moves like a range rover. As in most greys she began showing signs of skin cancer in the summer of 2022, and has been being successfully treated with topical cannabis.
Prince was rescued during the fall fire season and was extremely underweight. He was our best lesson horse and taught many young and timid people how to ride. Since he was not very regal when he was first rescued, he earned the name of Hoho, and that is what everyone called him. He loved that name and came to us happily when called to. One day, he just laid down and expired. He was not in discomfort and was just done with his very long life. The vet said he was at least 25 years old, maybe older, and we believe he passed away with a smile on his face and love in his heart.
Lili came to us because her owner, who loved her dearly, could no longer provide appropriate care for her, and her friend Ginni. They had been confined to an area completely surrounded by water and mud, which resulted in laminitis. Her feet were very tender and in need of corrective hoof care. She also has a severe allergy to gnats and flies, and her belly was completely covered in a painful rash and she had lost all of the hair at the base of her tail. She was also quite nervous and as a result had bad manners. After some time we were able to gain her trust and clean and medicate her belly and tail. We also began working with her on ground work to connect with her, and to work on her ground manners. Eventually we gained her respect and trust and restarted her under saddle. She showed us that she loves going out on trail rides, and is very sure footed and confident. She is a very sweet mare and some of our volunteer's very favorite horse.
Ollie is the sweetest mule ever. She was previously used as a pack mule and we hope to give her purpose again helping others learn the valuable skills involved with packing with mules. In April 2022 she was adopted by a skilled packer and we will continue to follow her success. She is now being called Opal and is extremely happy living with her new herd of similar friends!
King is Prince’s father and was equally skinny when we rescued him in September 2021. He came to us missing his right eye but he seemed to get by just fine. We soon found a perfect match for him and adopted him out to his favorite girl in the whole wide world. He also now lives with Brandy, whom he lived with when we rescued him. He and Brandy are very happy and so are their people. He has filled out and proven that he is quite the amazing horse. He moves like he has had experience in reining and cutting. Since his new home he has really bloomed into the perfect companion.
Bo is one of our sweetest soles, although he remains very untrusting of humans. He is extremely head shy and has issues being tied and having his feet lifted. We have been working with him on trust, and as long as he is handled by someone he trusts, and no others are nearby, he will stand for his feet to be worked on and allow himself to be bridled. Once under saddle he is an amazing ride. He is responsive and willing to please. He carries his head a little high at times due to his nervousness, but once he is comfortable he lowers his head and is a very comfortable gentleman.
See. Lili
When we rescued Curry, he was approximately 10 years old. He is a quarter horse palomino. He is flashy and strong headed, and believes he is a stallion. He was previously used in rodeo events and due to a stifle injury he could no longer compete. With the help of a friend of Kymber's, his original breeder was found and agreed to bring him home with them to live out his life happily at pasture with his brother and mother.
Luna is an Arabian teenager. Not too eager to trust at first, but once she trusts you she loves treats. She was seen by her donor being abused and recognized her severe anxiety being saddled, and asked us to give her a stress free home, while her owner recovered from a severe injury. Her owner recovered and Luna is now happily living out with her.
Olivia, a Percheron Thoroughbred, was a direct descendant of the great race horse Man o'War. After three happy years in our care, Olivia slipped on ice while out in a pasture and fell and broke her hip. We had to say goodbye to her in a hurry, and she will be missed dearly, especially by Gunner, who was her mate for many years. He stood over her to protect her while she awaited us to relieve her of her misery. We took very special care to bring Gunner in close (living at our personal home so he got much love and attention) and we brought Gigi home to befriend him. His depression seemed to be replaced with content, which makes us very happy. Currently he and Bella are bonding, because we have moved Gigi to Freshwater Valley Stables, where we are hosting Lost Soles Saddle Club for teenagers to learn horsemanship skills.
Gunner is our tank. He is a Belgian Quarterhorse in his mid to late teens. He is not quick to trust, but once he gets to know you he is like a puppy dog. He doesn't really like being brushed or touched much, but that is ever changing.
When we rescued Hazel she was easily in her late 20's and perhaps mid 30's. Her coloring indicates she is a rocky mountain quarter pony. She was found wild living on property that the owner had died and nobody knew animals were there for a few years. She was rounded up in such a way that she determined that people are mean and to be feared. She never got over her trust issues, despite all the loving and caring acts. One day she just laid down in the pasture and went to sleep forever. There was no indication of struggle nor discomfort. we believe that she died happily and in peace.
